More science fiction!

Mon Nov 9, 2009, 2:18 PM

  • Playing: Mirror's Edge
English:

I’m very happy, because my project for my diploma’s has been accepted. Now I’m sure I can work on it for the totality of the year. I’ll have to present it on front of a jury the 25th June… (It gives me a little time!)

So now, I can tell you what it is: The first part is an art book about an imaginary video game which title is “Cathaïr Mùndi” (World City)… We have three sections in this school: Illustration, Video Games and Animation… I’m in Illustration, because I have some … problems with computers. I take a lot of time to learn, so imagine my difficulties if I would have worked with 3DS Max or Maya… ! But I really wanted to do character design and concept art for a video game…

So I found a solution: I will do a video game witout 3D, only with drawings… A video game’s art book.

The story of Cathaïr Mùndi?

“In a giant and multicultural flying city (Cathaïr Mùndi), an officer who belongs to the dominant class, Fàndù, decides -in spite of his prejudices- to help a young girl immigrated who has strange powers, Amtziri ,to save their city from the unscrupulous manufacturers’ claws, discovering secrets of the Sidhe, the World of the Dead, a surprising and crazy world, which is endangered by the Ether’s extraction, the most used energy in the world of living Cathaïr Mùndi … »

It will talk about immigration, racism and discrimination, ecology and problems generated by capitalism and overconsumption… Yeeeees I now: so many serious subjects in a so little video game! But… I don’t like drawing something that doesn’t have sense, meaning. Cathair Mùndi will use tree cultures: Oriental (Arabic, Maghrebian and Berberian), Occidental (European) and to finish, Celtic (Breton, my own culture, and Irish).
If it would have been a real video game, I think it would have been between an action/ aventure game, and a RPG… Something between Primal, Tomb Rider, and Final Fantasy.
I m sure doing an engaged video game is possible, because it has been already done…
Remember:

• Final Fantasy X, where you have to destroy God in the end, because he’s the symbol of despotism, submission and alienation. Religions are very criticized in this game…
• Metal Gear Solid, which criticizes the madness of war...
• Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee
• GTA IV...

I’m hungry for meaning.
I’m sad when I watch films on TV or on cinema, because, they don’t “talk” to me anymore. They lack meaning. I think cinema lacks directors who criticize established things, who disturb people, these men who prevent people from stagnating , who plant discord and doubt’s seeds, who make people reflecting… But maybe it simply means public doesn’t like these things…

Well, I love these (few) guys. Those who make me think : “Merde! (Shit!) I didn’t think about this before, but yeah, he’s right!”

I really love this moment where you’re on the verge of changing your point of view, your convictions, after a good debate, a good discussion...

Beyond cinema, maybe all artistic productions have this “ problem”.
I think when something disturbs, or upsets, it’s good; it means we touch something which hurts us, but which is very important, and people often lie to themselves about this. Talking about discrimination of women in religions, about this strange racism against homosexuals in sacred books, about Occident’s building on the back of the Third World, about European colonization and the maintenance of dictatorships in Africa by these same countries (I mainly think to France) ,about these genocides we don’t enough talk about (Native American genocide – 9 Millions, or the Arab slave trade –Black people were castrated when they were slave in Ottoman Empire-) All these things hurt. And… That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

All these things are polemic. But it’s mainly for this reason we have to talk about it. Nothing can be most dangerous and horrible than taboo, and unsaid realities.

So I’ll try to add more meaning in my illustrations… I think it’s important.

But, I have to be honest; of course there is some films and artistic things which are “intelligent” or engaged! This is a little list of films I like, absolutely personal, so totally arbitrary! ^^

*American History X
*A Prophet
*The Truman Show
*Fight Club
*Lord of War
*Kingdom of Heaven
*Brazil
*The Island
*Minority report
*I robot
*Blade Runner
*Three Kings…

Sci fi is often engaged. Sci fi makes us reflecting.
I want more sci fi films and more engaged things!!!!!

*American History X
*Un Prophète
*The Truman Show
*Fight Club
*Lord of War
*Kingdom of Heaven
*Brazil
*The Island
*Minority report
*I robot
*Blade Runner

Hey! Your gallery is so great and that video game you are talking about in your journal an the ideas behind it sound amazing, so i just have to watch you...;)

I wish you all the luck for that project!
:iconcatell-ruz:
Waw! You managed to read my (so long) journal?! You must be the most courageous person I have met on DA! Thanks for your support!
:iconenergiesparlampe:
No problem!
I couldn't agree more with what you said about media today. and that it is important to talk about taboos on a serious level, people need to get out of their "safety-bubble" to face the problems this world realy has.

so I love the concept of your project, too. sounds exactly like a game i would enjoy so much...:)
:iconepsilorn:
I like your work! Also I, would like to become a Video Game concept artist one day. Best of Luck to you!
:iconcatell-ruz:
Thanks, my friend! Yeah I hope one day I will work for a video game project. It must be the most beautiful job in the world! ^^
:iconepsilorn:
Yeah! I think so... I'm now at the end of a work I didn't like, and now my dream is to switch to illustration and make a living out of it. We will see... Wish me good luck! :D
:iconcatell-ruz:
I cross my fingers for you!
:iconepsilorn:
Thanks! By the way I'm uploading some new images, these made in CG (I'm much more proficient with it than natural media), If you have time I would be pleased to have some comment! Bye

is it me, or is the one girl that we have been debating with, has been brained washed by her religion

I've the impression your sentence is not finished... :) If the question is "Do you still talk to the "brain washed" girl?", that's right. You know, that's a BIG BIG problem, but I'm very stubborn. And I like talking with people who don't think like me. That's fascinating, ah ah ah! I'm very, very curious, about people and their culture, who come from foreign country. And I like talking to people. And as I ever said, I like talking about polemic things. That's my nickname in my school: "POLEMIC-GIRL"!!! And, that's good for me, because I learn English.

Well, now, it becomes very hard, because she only uses biblical references, not scientist things, *sigh"! But I still managed to diturb her about some little details, like Westernization, or pension funds, or Homophobia in the Old Testament... It's hard debbating with these people: their replies are often absurd... (Acoordind to her, "Obama is not Black or Metis, he's Muslim", hahahahahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHA!) How can you reply to something that is absurd?!? Maybe it's a bad translation, but I've the impression some things are very confused in her head: she says Old Testament can be applied, but she don't want to kill homosexuals... (Fortunatly!) Whereas Bible says: 'If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. THEY MUST BE PUT TO DEATH; their blood will be on their own heads.” So strange... "lies" means "have sexual relations", yes?!?

You can help me debatting if you want! Even if I know it's vain and stupid to be so stubborn... She will not change anymore, now, it's too late!
